Coccolithophore is a microscopic marine alga
of a type that secretes a calcite shell.
Coccolithophores were particularly abundant
during the late Cretaceous period and their
calcite remains (coccoliths) form the chalk
deposits characteristic of South England,
North France, and Kansas, USA.
